Nvidia GeForce Graphics Cards

The Nvidia GeForce family of graphics cards includes both GTX and RTX cards. The difference between the two is that the former does not have hardware-level ray tracing capabilities while the latter does. 

This is because GTX graphics cards do not have RT cores, which are responsible for hardware-level ray tracing. However, Nvidia has continuously unlocked software-level ray tracing on older cards for gamers who do not want to upgrade to a more expensive offering.

GeForce cards are powerhouses in gaming and various workloads such as video and audio editing. They are also a great option for software developers and programmers who compile a lot of code since they have the horsepower to handle these tasks very quickly.

Quadro Graphics Cards

Quadro cards are built for specific workloads that are a lot heavier than those GeForce cards can handle. While they can perform very well in gaming, video editing, and other tasks, they do not provide additional benefits over their GeForce counterparts in those areas.

Where they thrive though is in heavier CAD and computational workloads. Whereas a GTX or RTC graphics card might struggle with double-sided polygons or wireframe editing, a Quadro card handles these tasks easily. This is one of the main reasons why these graphics are favoured by architects and can be found in numerous Lenovo PCs for Architects.


GeForce cards, especially the RTX cards in the 3000 series are very powerful cards capable of handling most tasks. However, Quadro cards beat them by some margin. Quadro cards also typically have more memory than their GeForce counterparts.  

The only cards that come close to matching the memory of Quadro cards are RTX 3090 and 3090 TI, which have 24 GB of VRAM. However, they are easily beaten by cards like the Quadro RTX 8000, which has 48 GB of video memory.

Double Precision Computing

While cards like the two mentioned above are very capable for double precision computing, they can’t match the power of Quadros. Quadro cards can do a lot more calculator per unit time, meaning that, for massive computational workloads, you want a Quadro in your system.

This amount of computational power is especially important in areas such as AI, the medical field, and scientific experiments where users have to run millions of calculations, simulations, and visualizations at a time.

Quadros are also built to handle longer computational tasks. They can sustain their speed and performance for longer compared to GeForce cards which might throttle under these conditions.

Both GeForce and Quadro cards are made with different focuses. GeForce cards are meant to do well in most tasks, with a focus on gaming and light productivity. Quadros, on the other hand, are meant for heavier workloads and are often designed with specific workloads in mind.
